A Career Path

As a new hire, you will start where we all started: patrolling our community. As a patrol officer, you will learn about our community, where you will have the unique opportunity to build the trusting relationships that we rely upon for our success as a police department and community. After two years of service, you can test for promotions and seek one of the many special assignments available within our police department.

Minimum Qualifications

Applicants must:

  • Possess a valid Indiana driver's license (or obtain one within 60 days of becoming an Indiana resident) and have no more than eight active points.
  • Be a U.S. citizen.
  • Be at least 21 years of age and not have reached 40 years of age by the date of appointment. The maximum age limit is 40 years and 6 months if you are a veteran with 20 years of service. Veterans include those who were previously in the United States Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, or the Indiana National Guard.
  • Be drug-free and have no convictions for operating a motor vehicle under the influence of drugs.
  • Have no felony convictions.
  • Have no convictions of any Class A misdemeanor.
  • Not have been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence.
  • Not have been dishonorably discharged from the military.
  • Be a high school graduate or possess a GED certificate.
  • Meet or exceed the Indiana Law Enforcement Physical Fitness Entry Standards

Salary:

Starting salaries based on experience:

  • Pre-Academy: $55,541
  • Post-Academy to 3 years: $60,266
  • 3 to 5 years: $63,603
  • 5+ years: $70,580

The hiring process:

The testing portion of the hiring process will be completed in one day, May 4, 2024. Non-certified officer applicants will participate in the state mandated physical fitness standards, a written test, and an oral interview. All certified officers seeking a lateral transfer will participate in the oral interview only.
