The Griffith Building Department oversees all work done by contractors and/or home owners within town limits. It is responsible for issuing building permits and performing inspections for construction and remodeling projects.

Permits enable inspectors to oversee work is done correctly and enforce provisions of the Indiana Building Code and local ordinances. These codes provide a minimum standard for safety and protection of life, health, property, and public welfare.

Not all work needs a permit, but ALL CONTRACTORS must be licensed with the Town of Griffith Building Department.

Examples of work that requires a permit:

  • Any new structure such as: a commercial/industrial building, residential home, garage, shed, fence, deck, ramp, swimming pool
  • Any additions to an existing structure such as: room addition, porch, attached garages
  • Interior/exterior remodeling such as: bathrooms, kitchens, finishing basements, framing, drywall, installation of new windows and doors, new siding, soffit, fascia, gutters, roofing, the cutting of any wall or partition, structure/framing changes, drain tile, tuck pointing
  • Any concrete/asphalt work such as: driveways, sidewalks, patios, aprons, parking lots, pads
  • Most commercial or industrial alterations and construction
  • Any work involving the extension or alteration of the electrical, plumbing or heating or air conditioning systems such as: new circuits, rewiring, service releases, panel upgrades, re-piping, new piping, boiler/furnace/ac change outs

Examples of work that do NOT require a permit:

  • Changing light fixtures and receptacles
  • Sewer rodding or maintenance
  • Painting or wallpapering
  • Residential floor coverings
  • Landscaping

*All contractors must still hold a valid contractor license with the Town of Griffith
