Sgt Gang is a veteran member of the Griffith Police Department. Upon graduating from Crown Point High School in 1990, he entered the United States Air Force as a Law Enforcement Specialist/Combat Security Police both stateside and abroad.  He served in positions such as Entry Controller, Armorer, M60 Machine Gunner Specialist, Military Customs Inspector, Response Team Leader, Patrol Officer and base SWAT Team member.  While stationed in the Republic of Turkey, he was nominated for Most Outstanding First Term Law Enforcement Specialist of the United States Air Force for the year 1991. During his service, he was stationed in various parts of the Middle East in support of Operations Desert Shield, Desert Storm, Provide Comfort and Southern Watch.

 

Separating from the Air Force in 1994 with an Honorable Discharge, he was hired by the Griffith Police Department, becoming a graduate of Class 94-119 of the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy.  Since his hire, he has held the ranks of Corporal (1998), Sergeant (2001), Lieutenant (2012) and Commander (2014) where he assumed and executed the numerous responsibilities that accompany those positions.

 

In 1997, he received certification as a Field Training Officer, responsible for assisting in the training of new officers upon their completion of the Law Enforcement Academy. In 2002 he became the Field Training Program Coordinator and served as such through 2010, revamping and updating the program while supervising all Field Training Officers. Although not as active in this program as he once was, he is still occasionally called upon to assist.  Also in 1997, Sgt Gang successfully completed the Harley Davidson Motor Officers Skills Curse and served as a motorcycle officer for the department for approximately four years until the use of a motorcycle was discontinued.

 

In 1998, he received certification as a Law Enforcement Firearms Instructor and in 2000, assumed the responsibility of Senior Firearms Instructor until 2012. He continues to instruct handgun, shotgun & rifle principles with armorer certifications in various weapon systems. Related to firearms training, he was instrumental in the construction of the Quad Town Training Facility and upon completion, served as the Range Master for many years.  In 2003, Sgt Gang successfully completed the four-month School of Police Staff and Command through the Northwestern University School of Public Safety.

 

In 2004, Sgt Gang was assigned as staff at the Northwest Indiana Law Enforcement Academy as a full time Troop Handler/Drill Instructor for new recruits. He performed these duties for four graduating classes. After his assignment, he continued to guest instruct for the academy in firearms and use of force.  Between 2004 and 2006, Sgt Gang took an interest in SCUBA diving and obtained certification as a Public Safety Diver to include ice diving and cold-water operations.

 

In 2006, Sgt Gang received his certification as an Active Shooter Response Instructor and has since received additional related certifications to include being an Indirect Instructor through Louisiana State University who supports federal accreditation through NCBRT/Academy of Counter-Terrorist Education. He has completed hundreds of hours of active shooter training for hundreds of officers throughout Lake & Porter Counties and continues to do so. He has also attended numerous state and federally sponsored training courses regarding subjects such as response to domestic terrorism, aftermath management, facility security assessments and basic explosives.

 

In 2011 he successfully completed the basic and advanced course for the Reid Technique of Interview and Interrogation.

 

In 2016, Sgt Gang was accepted as a member of Northwest Regional SWAT where he currently serves as the team's Public Information Officer. With an FBI Certification in Hostage/Crisis Negotiation, he also serves as Team Leader for the Crisis Negotiations Team.

 

In 2022, Sgt Gang was assigned duties as School Resource Officer (SRO) for Griffith Public Schools. He has acquired his SRO certification through NASRO and his state certification as an Indiana School Safety Specialist.
