Sewer Department

The Sewer Department is responsible for the maintenance, repair and upkeep of all Public Sewer Mains throughout the community. We regularly clean these Public Mains. The Sewer Department also reviews and approves all proposed sewer system connections and extensions within the Town.

Sewer Back-ups

There are two basic types of Sewers Systems; Storm and Sanitary. Maintenance issues of these systems are handled as follows: If a blockage is suspected in the Town's Main Sewer line Residents are asked to call the Public Works Department at (219) 924-3838. We will dispatch a crew to check our Main and clean out immediately if necessary. If the blockage is in the Residents private  service-line between the Residents dwelling and the Town's Main Sewer line, the Resident will be advised to call a private Sewer cleaning service to have their service-line cleaned at their expense. If there is any doubt where the back-up is located, the Town's Sewer Department will be dispatched to make that determination. After normal working hours, please call 911 and a Public Works employee will be dispatched.

Connections

Standards must be met to receive a permit for installation of a Sanitary or Storm Sewer. For more information please call the Public Works Sewer Department at (219) 924-3838.

Report Sanitary/ Storm Sewer Issue or Water Main Break

A Sanitary or Storm Sewer issue may affect the distribution and/or flow of Sanitary Sewage or Storm Water from Residential or Business dwellings or their properties. If a resident observes an excessive amount of water on the ground surface, or water surcharging from a street manhole, it may indicate a Sanitary/Storm sewer issue and/or a Water Main Break. During normal business hours, Monday - Friday between 8:00 am - 4:30 pm, the Public Works office asks residents to call 924-3838 with the address and location of the issue. After normal business hours, or during weekends and Holidays, residents are asked to call 911 with the address and location of the issue. However and please note, often times during Heavy Rain Events Storm sewers may experience surcharging until the rain subsides or until the system resumes normal operations.
