The Town of Griffith was incorporated on October 29, 1904.

The town covers an area of approximately 7 square miles and there are about 60 miles of streets. Town functions are paid through property taxes and state shared taxes. Griffith's residents enjoy a variety of social, cultural, and recreational facilities. The approximate population of Griffith based on the 2000 Census is 17,334.

The town's business is administered by a five-person Town Council and a Clerk-Treasurer. All stand for election every four years. Additionally, business and community leaders are appointed by the Town Council to serve on various boards and commissions, such as the Plan Commission, Board of Zoning Appeals, and Police Commission.

Griffith Education Foundation Hometown Run Aug 16 [read more...]
Sign up now for the 13th Annual Hometown 5k Run & 2 Mile Fun Walk on August 16, 2008. The race is being sponsored by the Griffith Public Schools Educational Foundation, begins and ends at Beiriger Elementary School. With the help of hundreds of volunteers and residents, the race has become a true community event, as well as one of the premier races in Northwest Indiana. Finisher medals are awarded to all, upon completion of the race, which winds its way down the bike path and through our beautiful Central Park. Technical fabric T-shirts will be given to all runners pre-registered by August 10th. Entry fee is $20.00 for runners and $10.00 for walkers. On July 26, 2008 from 6pm - midnight the Griffith Fire Dept will be holding and celebrating its Annual Firemens Dance and Raffle at the #1 Fire Station located at the 130 N. Lafayette St. We are asking for YOUR SUPPORT in providing the Dept with funds to purchase necessary equipment to PROTECT the men and women who operate the Fire Dept. On June 4th, 2008 The American Legion District 1 in Lake Station presented District 1 Law Enforcement Officer of the Year to Chief Ron Kottka. He now moves on to the State Convention in Indianapolis on July 12.

Broad St. The discussion provides time for residents to present concerns or problems and ask questions pertaining to their neighborhoods. "We have effective solutions to deter crime that only need to be implemented," Officer Tony Morris said. "Do not accept crime as normal. It is not and won't be accepted." Statue of Liberty to Leave Griffith in Caravan on Aug. 3
Beryl Martin Co. of Griffith, IN has been very busy building a massive 130 foot replica of the Statue of Liberty and would like to invite you to witness the Worlds Largest Foam Replica of the Statue of Liberty to begin her journey to St. Louis, MO on Sunday August 3, 2008. The Lady Liberty Replica will depart from the Starting Site of Beryl Martin's production house located at 1313 East Main Street, Griffith, IN at 12 noon.
UPS will be transporting her in their largest transportation job-to-date with 80 trailers in a 2 mile caravan. The caravan will head west on Main Street in Griffith, IN to US 41 South to Terre Haute, IN to Interstate 70 West towards St. Louis, MO. A police escort will lead the 80 trailer caravan.
All are invited to attend the activities in Griffith, IN (which will include a 3,000 red, white, and blue balloon release, live bands, food and fun) Don't miss this once in a lifetime event or the hospitality of the people of Griffith. We hope to see you there.

Griffith's Downtown Revitalization Committee (DRC) organized a Downtown clean up event on June 7. Close to 50 volunteers were painting, power washing, planting, landscaping and cleaning in order to give the Downtown area a facelift. This was the first step towards revitalizing the Downtown Area. There are many more projects on the horizon. Anyone interested in getting involved with this community event should call 924-7500 or email DRC@griffith.in.gov
